President John Rodgers founded Acoustic Emission Consulting, Inc. (AEC) in 1991, after a career as Vice President of both Acoustic Emission Technology Corp (AET, 1979-88) and the successor company, Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection Technologies (HSBIT, 1988-91). These companies were a major manufacturer of advanced acoustic emission equipment and sensors. Mr. Rodgers served as head of applications engineering, manager of marketing and sales, and manager of engineering development during his tenure there. He established AEC as a service company, and worked with The Electric Power Research Institute and Pacific Gas & Electric Co to establish acoustic emission testing as a standardized method for testing of high energy seam-welded piping in fossil power plants. AEC has become the most experienced field testing company for testing this piping (see our services website).

In 2000 we were joined by Mark Ferdinand, a design engineer with a distinguished history of involvement in the AE industry, both as a hardware and software designer. Mark¹s career includes tenures with AE International, Hartford Steam Boiler, Babcock & Wilcox, and Online Digital Technologies. He was responsible for the development of the Echo GT, the most successful multichannel computer based system used for testing of aerial manlift vehicles. He also developed the design that has become the AED-2000, the first of our field portable instrument designs.

Together we bring a broad background of over 50 man-years of experience in many AE applications, including:

  • AE testing of metals, ceramics, composites, and wood products.

  • Leak detection in pipelines and valves.

  • Corrosion detection in aerospace structures.

  • Machinery health monitoring (bearings, motors, etc).

  • Partial discharge detection in transformers.

  • Insect pest detection in wood and commercial agricultural products (USDA)

  • Advanced pattern recognition using ICEPAK software from TISEC.

  • Head/disk contact monitoring in hard drives.

  • Industrial process monitoring applications of AE and acousto-ultrasonics.

Our goal is to provide innovative solutions to field and industrial applications of acoustic emission and acoustic monitoring. We welcome joint ventures and cooperative efforts aimed at adapting our instrumentation and software to novel and useful applications.
